Frequently asked questions
Why does my poverty-level percentage matter?
It is the starting point for most health coverage help. The government compares your household income and size with the yearly guideline.
The resulting percentage helps decide whether you can get premium tax credits, lower out-of-pocket costs or Medicaid.
If I am in a certain range, do I qualify automatically?
Not on its own. The percentage is important, but it is one of several factors.
Your state, your household and the coverage already available to you also count. Orchard shows the percentage first and then helps you see what it may mean for savings or Medicaid, instead of a simple yes or no.
My income changes from month to month. What should I enter?
Use your best estimate for the whole year. Irregular income is normal for freelancers, hourly and seasonal workers.
If your income ends up higher or lower, what you qualify for can change. Update your Marketplace application when that happens so your savings stay accurate and there are no surprises at tax time.
